Have you wondered what are Parenting Styles?

Indian culture has a strong tradition of authoritarian parenting, where parents play a significant role in making decisions and enforcing rigid laws for their children to follow. However, there are four parenting styles, plus a new additional parenting style that has emerged in recent years. There are four parenting styles :

1. The authoritarian parenting style
2. The authoritative parenting style
3. The permissive parenting style
4. The uninvolved parenting style

The authoritarian parenting style

Authoritarian parents expect their children to follow the strict rules that are set for them and meet their parents high expectations. The response parents give when asked to justify their rigid rules and for setting higher goals is simply: “You have to follow because I said so,” “my house has my rules,” or “mother/father knows the best.” The child has no say in any decision that the parents make; they are simply expected to follow without raising any questions. If they go against their parents, disobey, or make any mistake, they are severely punished.Parents are more obedience- and status-oriented; they are described as domineering and dictatorial.

Outcome of Authoritarian Parenting

  • Lack of autonmy & self-differentiation – They struggle to think of their own and make their own decisions.
  • More likely show the same authoritarian behaviour to their fellow peers and to their children.
  • Poor interpersonal and intra personal skills.
  • Intolerance towards failures and mistakes.
  • Aggressive – They have difficulty in relationships
  • Low self-esteem
  • They are also more prone to mental health disorders

Permissive parenting

Permissive parenting is characterized by low demands with high responsiveness. Parents are very loving and set few or no rules for the children to follow. They tend to be warm, nurturing towards their children and communication between the parent and the child remains open. Parents allow their children to figure things on their own and easily give into the child’s demands and request. They act more like a friend than a parent.

In setting goals for their children, they set realistic goals, understanding the needs and potential of the child. Authoritative parents enforce rules and consequences consistently to teach their children the importance of accountability and responsibility.
